Book Review: Fair Isle Tunisian Crochet by Brenda Bourg

Brenda Bourg has proven what I've believed for a long time: "There are no limits to the creative possibilities of crochet!" Not only does one learn Tunisian crochet in her new book, but  also  how to expand Tunisian crochet skills by working in two colors to create the exquisite Fair Isle look. Annabel Bag Brenda uses the Tunisian Knit Stitch throughout the book, and introduces the reader to the use of the Tunisian hook with a cable. Thus, larger projects are possible including sweater designs. The sixteen projects in the book include a wide range of pattern-making experiences from boot cuffs and head bands to sweaters and afghans. Brenda also recommends the use of a nice selection of yarns for the projects affording the crocheter the opportunity to experience the feel and function of many yarns. She gives advise on substituting yarns, as well. Elish Afghan In the extensive tutorial section, the author has thought of everything that the crocheter needs to...

Chicago One-Of-A-Kind Show Freatures UpScale Crochet

February 8, 2014 As reported by Amy Kaspar in the Chicago Knitting Examiner on January 28, 2014, “Women Taking Action, an organization founded by Kamilah Paden and Angela Underwood to further the education and empowerment of women in both their personal and corporate worlds, held their day-long workshop at the University of Illinois at Chicago.” The keynote speaker was Shirley a New York-based designer, who had previously worked in corporate America before making the daring decision to become a knitwear designer. Paden's keynote address, “Finding the Courage to Follow Your Bliss” was focused on her personal journey and how her story can be an inspiration to others to follow their own path they carve for themselves. Shirley’s closing remarks resonated with everyone when she told them what her husband had once said to her , "If someone made you work this hard, you would quit immediately."   Once a year, the fantastic designer craft exhibit, One-of-a-Kind , comes t...

Ten Favorite Scarves of 2013

Tuesday, January 14, 2013 Not that I am wanting to recall the bitter chill of last week here in Chicago (17 below, 45 below windchill) and around the nation, but it did get me looking back. Have you ever noticed that when you are feeling just a bit chilly inside, the addition of a scarf or cowl warms your entire body? It might be the colorful yarn, the fuzzy feel or the thought of the talented hands that made the scarf, but they seem to warm the soul as well as the body! Here's a look back at my ten favorite scarves/cowls this year. I've included links so you can make them too! Winter 1) Gwyneth Cable Cow l Unique cables add a fashionable touch to office wear.   2) Chunky Tweed Cowl  Encircled in warmth, you'll also make a fashion statement! 3) Ringo Neckwarmer The colors of fall "encircle" you with warmth! Spring 1) As You Like It Cowl Lightweight and playful as you come out of the cocoon of winter! 3) Elise Shawl...

Fall Wrap-Up

Monday, October 21, 2013 Much as I hate to see the vibrant colors, invigorating air and doses of sunshine on the shoulders come to an end, it is also fun to pull out last year's scarves, cowls and shawls in anticipation of wrapping up for cozy days and nights of crocheting. Paisley Cowl-2013 Seven paisleys were languishing in the "deal-with-this-later" pile when the President of my CGOA chapter offered up a UFO Challenge. I didn't win the $50.00 drawing, but I got a new cowl finished! To "wrap up" news of my autumn activities, all I can say is it has been quite hectic. Capitol Building, Des Moines, IA: birthplace of our eldest Riverwalk in Des Moines: clear skies, crisp air! Quilt Study Center, Lincoln, NE Visiting Alan's sister, Alice: tractor museum Chicken wire gown: art museum campus of U of NE Detail Promoting my book, blogging more often and an array of guest bloggers has kept me on my toes. I have been...
