Step into Crochet by Rohn Strong |
When I first picked up Rohn's book, I had the attitude that very little could be added to the information out there on making socks. Boy, was I wrong!
Rohn believes that if you ask any crocheter if they have ever crocheted socks, you will receive one of two "answers: "Yes, but they never fit;" "No, but I've always wanted to." If this sounds like you, get ready to learn, and learn more than you ever thought you could about socks!

Mr. Strong's principal goal is to share techniques that will guarantee that your crocheted socks fit you. Chapter 1, "Crocheting Socks that Fit," stresses that these socks are NOT one-size fits all! Detailed instructions show the crocheter how to measure to achieve a perfect fit. Included are 18 patterns that are unique and interesting.
Chapter 2, "Choosing the Right Yarn," details the qualities in the fibers needed to achieve success with additional tips on reading labels and cost vs. quality. Get started with the tools you need to create your first sock. "Basic Sock Construction" in Chapter 3, breaks down the anatomy of a sock with a clear chart and many added details; and the author instills confidence to proceed. Heels, toes and cuffs are stressed in Chapter 4; and in Chapter 5, "Simple Socks," they come to life with 2 patterns each, offered in the cuff-down and toe-up methods.

By chapter 6, confidence in the basics allows the crocheter to move on to Textured and Cabled Socks. Six interesting patterns are presented; and I just wish I knew the inspiration behind the interesting pattern names; i.e.
North Hills, Oakwood, Raulston.

Chapters 7 & 8 conclude the book with the most complex designs: "Colorwork" and "Lace" along with the standard informative sections that include abbreviations, techniques, book and yarn resources. All in all, this is a great book for not only expanding your knowledge of a wide range of sock techniques, but also for knowledge of good crochet technique in general.
